About RAID Storage

RAID - Short for Redundant Array of Independent (or Inexpensive) Disks, a category of disk drives that employ two or more drives in a single logical unit to offer high availability, performance or a combination of both. This provides better resilience and performance than a single disk drive.

Three Elemental Types of RAID Defined

RAID 0 (Data Strip)
Striped Disk Array without Fault Tolerance: Provides data striping (spreading out blocks of each file across multiple disk drives) but no redundancy. This improves performance but does not deliver fault tolerance. If one drive fails then all data in the array is lost.

RAID 1 (Data Mirror)
This type is also known as disk mirroring and consists of at least two drives that duplicate the storage of data. There is no striping. Read performance is improved since either disk can be read at the same time. Write performance is the same as for single disk storage. RAID 1 provides the best performance and the best fault-tolerance in a multi-user system.

RAID 5 (Data Strip & Parity)
Block Interleaved Distributed Parity: Provides data striping at the byte level and also stripe error correction information. This results in excellent performance and good fault tolerance. Raid 5 requires at least three and usually five disks for the array. Raid 5 is one of the most popular implementations of RAID.
