Sometimes, the best stories don’t come from movies or novels but in video games. As an avid gamer, there are hundreds of video games with fantastic plots I can enumerate for you to play on your PC or gaming laptop. However, it is those who have shocking endings that leave a lasting impression. That’s why for today, we’re listing down seven video games with the most shocking endings.

In video games today, don’t expect that every story will have a happy ending. The five part episodic video game set in Robert Kirkman’s “The Walking Dead” universe has proven this. We’ve witnessed how the young orphaned girl Clementine is forced to put an end to the man who took care of her, the main protagonist, Lee.

It is no secret that throughout the series Lucy and Desmond have displayed their feelings for each other. And the truth is, we were actually rooting for them. However, the writers don’t seem to like that idea. At the end, when Desmond’s hand made contact with the Apple of Eden, his body was possessed by a First Civilization member named Juno and was forced to kill Lucy by stabbing her with his Hidden Blade.

Heavy Rain has one of the best-written plots in the history of action-adventure games. It puts the player in the role of four different characters, who are all in the same mission of finding the Origami killer. One of this characters is Scott Shelby, a former policeman. Throughout the game, Shelby seems to be finding evidence to the true identity of the Origami Killer. However, in the end, it was revealed that Shelby actually was the Origami killer and that he is destroying any evidence that will lead to him being suspected.

During the first game Portal 1, we all see the masterful shocking twist that came in the end when the GLaDOS AI System we all once thought to be helpful is actually evil and manipulative. In the sequel, Chell is given a dim-witted sidekick robot named Wheatley to help her. However, after Chell defeats GLaDOS, Wheatley stabs her in the back, revealing himself as the real villain.

It follows the story of John Marston who turns in the members of his old gang to start a new life and return to his family with the help of Lawmen, the same ones who will double cross and assail him with a barrage of bullets. This led to Marston’s son, Jack, to seek revenge for his father’s death.

If you’re given a choice to either save the world or save the girl you treated like your own daughter, what will you do? Well, Joel from The Last of Us made a shocking decision when he decided to save Ellie, the girl whose death can lead to the discovery of the cure and save the last remnants of humanity. Everyone might be pleased with its emotional ending, but if you think about it, Joel actually took away the last chance for the humans to survive all because of his feelings.

The infinite ending that left us confused.

BioShock is one of those few video games that will leave you to mind in mayhem. It was revealed the game was part of a multiverse where  Zachary Comstock is actually the reincarnated version of Booker in other worlds. In the end, Booker decided that the only way to stop Comstock is to die at his baptism. Multiple versions of Elizabeth help him with this, and he allows them to drown him by holding him underwater.
